At My Storage, we’re committed to providing helpful advice and support. This month, we’re focusing on how to pack your storage unit efficiently and effectively. Here are some practical tips to make the process easier and maximize your space.
Tips for Packing a Storage Unit
- Choose the Correct Unit Size
- Ensure it is accessible, and the rent is within your budget.
- Use Sturdy, Labelled Boxes
- Tape securely, label with contents, and mark “this side up” if necessary.
- Stack Smartly
- Use same-sized boxes for stable stacking. My Storage has boxes available for purchase.
- Place heavier boxes at the bottom and lighter ones on top.
- Avoid stacking too high and distribute weight evenly.
- Allow Air Circulation
- Leave space between items to prevent moisture buildup.
- Protect Fragile and Large Items
- Cushion breakables with bubble wrap or towels. Bubble wrap is available for purchase in the My Storage Office.
- Cover furniture with dust sheets or covers.
- Use vacuum-sealed bags for clothes or linens.
- Add desiccants to combat moisture.
- Disassemble Furniture
- Take apart large items and label small parts in bags.
- Organize for Accessibility
- Place frequently used items near the front.
- Leave a walkway if possible for convenient access.
- Store Only Dry Items
- Ensure everything is completely dry to prevent mold.
- Avoid Prohibited Items
- Follow storage guidelines; avoid flammables, perishables, and illegal items.
